Tanjung Bungah at SS2

Another curry fish head review? Not again!!

Ok, ok. I know. We’ve done a review on a curry fish head restaurant (Assam Fish Head at Long Khee) in Subang not too long ago. But the reason for this review was more because of the coffee spareribs. Initially when I heard Marianne mentioned about their coffee spareribs I was like "Wah seh, sounds like a very exotic dish hor. Never heard before leh." And later I found out from friends that this dish is not that uncommon. Thus I suddenly felt like I’m so ’sua ku’.

Anyway, the place is called Tanjung Bungah Curry Fish Head Restaurant. It’s located in SS2, same row of shop as Cheow Yang (SS2’s very famous hawker restaurant). For those of you who are not familiar with SS2, sorry lor. I’m too lazy to explain so much P

There were Wilfy, Marianne, Thomas, Samson and me. You know what? Marianne actually arrived earlier than me. *gasp in disbelieve* She has finally shed the crown of Miss-Forever-Late for once after being crowned from since don’t know when. And I thought so till she was late again during our next outing. *tsk* *tsk* *tsk*

All right, enough of bashing on Marianne. Now, let’s get excited about the food! Let me just go through it dish by dish.

This was the Prawn in Weird Sauce with the big prawns being split into halves. What’s so weird about the sauce? We were wondering at first. Nah, it was no big deal at all after we bathed our tongue in it. Nothing weird and nothing special. It just tasted a bit sweet, slightly sour and spicy. When given the name ‘weird sauce’ we naturally was anticipating for some taste that might make us feel like never before, gastronomical, funny, choking, dodgy, etc. You tell me, what is so weird about sweet, sour and spicy sauce? Why don’t they make it taste like jackfruit mixed with chili padi and celery juice? Now, that’s what I called weird sauce. But then I really doubt if anyone would find this weird mixture tasty. Ewwww…arrgghhh… *puking*  Or might as well just name the dish with the typical name like "Sweet, Sour and Spicy Prawn".

This Tai-chi beancurd tasted like every other normal "chiu pai tau foo" where you can get from most "tai chow" places." It means the taste is ok but very common and nothing unique.

Yoo Hoo Char is actually something I have never tried in my entire life.  |   Nope, never even laid my eyes upon it before. It appears to be a dish originated from Penang. Sorry to say this but it didn’t look too appealing to me. It looked like a plate of bland shredded "mang kuang" (is it turnip?) and you are supposed to eat it with lettuce that is also tasteless. "Mang kuang" with no taste + lettuce with no taste = what a horrific eating experience??  faint   And Wilfy was complaining about some kind of burnt taste *sniff* *sniff* which we all agreed on.

Curry Fish Head (or is it Fish Head Curry leh?) *shaking my head* It wasn’t fresh enough and we could only excavate bones after bones after bones after bones….. Ok la, it wasn’t that bad just that we think we deserve more flesh. By the way, why the heck did they dismembered the fish head till it was beyond recognition? It caused a big stir, you know.  Marianne was pulling her hair insanely and screaming on top of her lungs asking why she couldn’t find the fish’s eyesballs. At that point of time, the rest of us could only bow our head low low hoping that people won’t be able to notice our face. oops

The coffee spareribs was yummy yummy (taste similar to marmite spareribs) but too bad it didn’t live up to its name cuz there was no coffee taste. As I was asking "The coffee spareribs has got no coffee taste, right? Raise your hands if you taste the coffee." All hands down except for Samson, the only odd one. Hmm…maybe it was the taste of the coffee he drank… last night… 8-O you mean, you mean, he didn’t brush his teeth?? Oopsy, didn’t mean to say it out LOUD! Muarhahaha…

Post-mortem of the coffee spareribs.

Group photo of the food. Ka-cheng! Ka-cheng! At the end, all these dishes (including a pot of refillable "suet char") for the 5 of us cost a total of RM112.00.

Notice the picture frames hanging on the wall. Apparently, this restaurant has quite a few awards and newspaper reviews. But unfortunately, it didn’t really satisfy our appetite on that day. Ok, time to vote. "Would any of you wanna come back again?" As I looked around, they were all quiet and no hands up. So you know wat it means la.
